OUR HISTORY

NYAMASIIZI GREEN VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER (NGVMC)

Founding and aim: The Nyamasiizi Green Valley Medical Center is located in Rubanda District, Kabale Diocese, Uganda (East Africa). It was begun by the late Rev. Fr. Lazarus Kabasharira in 1981 as a non-for-profit Health Care Unit to help the vulnerable population in his/our village who at that time were required to travel and walk long distances for the treatment of simple illnesses which could be treated locally even by a well-trained nurse. Nyamasiizi Green Valley Medical Center facility is still currently providing health services to a Population of more than 20 villages. It is the only clinic serving three parishes namely Ruhonwa, Mpungu and major parts of Mushanje. There is a car on stand-by which offers ambulance Services to cases that need referral. This facility has one nurse, one midwife and one laboratory Assistant all of which try to make sure that there is at least some health care services provided to the community around. Plans for a community health insurance are underway in preparations.

Though the Health Sector in the local government supports this initiative, this Nyamasiizi Health Care Center still lacks a lot of services that would be provided to the people if we had the necessary means and resources. The ideas of constructing a new larger building and make this Health Center into a hospital, in future, is to bring the services near to the vulnerable people of Nyamasiizi and all other surrounding areas. For example, currently to access the hospital where there is a CT Scan a patient has to travel for 70 miles. There is no available X-Ray equipment in the whole of Rubanda District. It is only in Mulago referral hospital where people are referred for tests regarding cases like cancer care, and even for the simple diagnosis of common illnesses and ailments such as diabetes, High blood pressure and the like. From Nyamasiizi village to this Mulago referral Hospital it is more than 270 miles away. Yet still it is at this small facility that most immunizations are currently done. We have enough land where we can build to expand this Health Center and, the construction of a new structure of buildings is underway.

The plan is to construct a new and larger facility to accommodate the large population we serve. We also hope that with the provision of other services that are not offered in Uganda, as a whole, that when we introduce all these lacking services we can begin to even help people who come from other districts of Uganda and the neighboring countries. More than we thought before, who could think that we would have a pandemic like COVID-19 that would even stop the rich people from leaving Uganda to go to other western countries where they had always gone to access the better health care that is not provided anywhere else in Uganda. The idea of constructing a larger accommodating building is to bridge this gap and God willing we can begin to provide services that are not offered anywhere else in Uganda and Africa as a whole.
